DeKalb County honors the memory of the men who fought to preserve the Union, invoking the hope that the nation would, under God, have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people would not perish from the earth. It recalls the Civil War years 1861 to 1865 and links that service to slavery abolished and peace restored, naming battles and places including Anteitam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Donelson, Stone River, Shiloh, Atlanta, Vicksburg, Nashville, Malvern Hill, Richmond, and Appomattox.
