During World War II, Wakulla County honored the struggles and sacrifices of its veterans, whose service helped bring freedom to much of the world and made the country safer and more secure. Leading up to the Normandy Invasion on D-Day, Wakulla Springs Park was used by the Army to train over a quarter of a million soldiers for amphibious warfare, and it also served as a major rest and relaxation location for soldiers stationed at Camp Gordon Johnston in Franklin County. A training film on amphibious warfare produced at Wakulla Springs Park won an academy award for the best training film in the spring of 1944. The county's forest industry supplied turpentine and wood for the war effort.
