Lake Loramie State Park occupies four hundred seven acres along the shore of Lake Loramie near Fort Loramie in western Ohio. The lake’s name preserves the memory of Pierre-Louis de Lorimier, known in English as Peter Loramie, who established a trading post at the mouth of Loramie Creek in seventeen sixty-nine. The lake itself was created in eighteen forty-four and eighteen forty-five as a storage reservoir for the Miami-Erie Canal system, which supported Ohio transportation and commerce before railroads predominated. In nineteen forty-nine it passed to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for recreation, and today the area is used for fishing, boating, camping, and cabin stays.
