In 1851, P.V. Crawford wrote of finding a gap in the bluffs of the Boise Valley and descending safely into the valley on a road that was very steep, stony, and long. From near this location, the land remains much as it was then, with Table Rock rising from the valley floor, the Boise River, and the three plateaus south of the river. Original ruts of the Oregon Trail still fan out across the plain. The Kelton Ramp, three-quarters of a mile away, was cut from solid rock and stands as a work of Civil War era engineering and ingenuity. Though much in the area has changed, it remains home to wildlife, especially birds of prey and migrating birds, and continues as a trail of discovery.
