At the Upper Works at Stony Point, two flank batteries inside the fortification held large ship guns, but after the first shots of the attack Lieutenant John Roberts of the Royal Artillery told Captain Clayton that the artillery was not being used because the ammunition had not come up and, in any case, the heavy cannon could not be lowered far enough to fire on the Light Infantry advancing through the hollow and across the water. The attackers charged the Upper Works with unloaded muskets, relying on bayonets alone, and in the pitch darkness the American troops wore white pieces of paper in their hats to distinguish themselves in the hand-to-hand fighting. Captain Henry Champion of Connecticut recalled that, as his south column climbed the steep bank of Stony Point, it faced brisk fire from cannon, grapeshot, langrage, and small arms with ball and buckshot, yet the troops advanced with regularity and firmness without firing a gun or breaking order except to climb the abatis and then reforming instantly after passing it.
