The Town of Shoe Heel was incorporated as Maxton on February 16, 1874. Its centennial was observed from March 29 to April 6, 1974, and a capsule was bequeathed to the bicentennial in 2074. The original stone of Carolina College burned on Wednesday, November 7, 1973. Carolina Methodist College was authorized by the N.C. Conference on December 5, 1906, and its cornerstone was laid in 1908.
