Preston began around Frazier's Chapel, an early Methodist church, in 1846 on land that had been purchased in 1797. It was first called Snowhill, but in 1856 the name was changed to Preston in honor of a prominent Baltimore lawyer. Preston was chartered as a town in 1892.
