Two Berlin Wall segments that stood between the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie from 1961 to 1989 were donated for two commemorative purposes: one in gratitude to all military chaplains who faithfully served God and Country in war and peace, associated with Chaplain (Lt. Col.) and Mrs. H.W. Reinke of the U.S. Air Force, and the other in honor of the citizens of Ratingen, Germany, the sister city of Vermillion, South Dakota, and its mayor, Dr. Ernst Dietrich, for fostering democratic ideals and German American relations.
