Visitors from around the world, including U. S. Presidents, drank and bathed in the sulphur waters because they were believed to have medicinal properties. The Native American name for this spring was Kan-a-swa-stak-e-ras, meaning "the place where mud smells bad." The St. Regis Mohawks first showed it to U.S. surveyors in 1785, and Sulphur Spring Water was first sold in the early 1900's.
