Little Cumberland Island Light stands on the north end of Little Cumberland Island beside Cumberland Island on Georgia’s southeast coast. Built in 1838 from a design by Winslow Lewis, the 60-foot lighthouse guided ships into St. Andrew Sound and the Satilla River and warned of a nearby shoal. Its lighting system was upgraded in 1857 with a French-made third-order Fresnel lens, extending its range. After shoreline changes threatened the site, a brick wall was added in 1874. The station stayed active until 1915. Although the other station buildings vanished, the tower survived, was restored in the late twentieth century and 2016, and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
