Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area
Nature
Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area in Jasper County, Illinois, spans 1,775 acres around Newton Lake, an artificial reservoir created to provide cooling water for the coal-fired Newton Power Station operated by Ameren. Its significance extends beyond the reservoir to surrounding grasslands that support the largest of Illinois’s three remaining greater prairie chicken flocks. This combination of managed lake and prairie habitat makes the area important both for public recreation and for conserving a bird that has become rare in the state.
