Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area in Jasper County, Illinois, spans 1,775 acres around Newton Lake, an artificial reservoir created to provide cooling water for the coal-fired Newton Power Station operated by Ameren. Its significance extends beyond the reservoir to surrounding grasslands that support the largest of Illinois’s three remaining greater prairie chicken flocks.
