Organized July 28, 1839, with thirteen original members, one of them a slave, this church stood on the site where its original wooden building was completed in 1843. During the War Between the States it was used as a Confederate hospital. L. S. Foster, founder of the Mississippi Baptist Orphanage, was ordained here, and General Stephen D. Lee, first president of A. and M. College, now Mississippi State University, served the congregation as a deacon. The wooden church was replaced in 1889 by a brick building that was renovated and enlarged in 1914 and 1922, followed by the erection of the Ray Memorial Building in 1956 and the sanctuary in 1962.
