The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, California, stands on land once owned by Nixon’s family and combines archives, museum exhibits, his restored birthplace, and the graves of Richard and Pat Nixon. Its development was shaped by Watergate, because federal law kept Nixon’s White House papers and tapes in government custody after his 1974 resignation, preventing the site from initially receiving the core presidential records. Opened in 1990 as a privately funded institution, it entered the National Archives system in 2007. Today it holds millions of records and gifts, while its exhibits interpret Nixon’s life, presidency, and contested legacy.
