Rivers Bridge State Historic Site near Ehrhardt, also known as Rivers Bridge State Park, preserves the scene of an important Civil War battle fought during General William T. Sherman's northward advance from Savannah. After two days of fighting there, Sherman outflanked Confederate forces and compelled their withdrawal. The site's later history became closely connected to remembrance of the battle. In 1876, men from nearby communities reburied the Confederate dead in a mass grave about a mile from the battlefield and began an annual commemoration. The Rivers Bridge Memorial Association later acquired the battlefield and turned it over to the state in 1945 for use as a park.
