Old Sparta was the oldest Edgecombe settlement. Its land patent dated to 1726, and a Tar River ferry operated at the mouth of Town Creek by 1740. The settlement was known as Town Creek in the 1730s, was called Sparta before 1811, and was renamed Old Sparta in 1903. Sparta Academy was chartered in 1829.
