Michael “Mike” Tovey, a Wells Fargo messenger, was killed and stage driver DeWitt Clinton Radcliff was injured at this spot on June 15, 1893, when a lone bandit attempted to hold up the regular six-horse stage on the old Ione-Jackson Stage Road. A line of stages had been established in 1850, running between Sacramento and Sonora by way of Q Ranch near Ione, Jackson, Mokelumne Hill, Angels, and Columbia. In the early days, more than $256,000,000 in gold bullion is said to have been carried over this main artery to the Mother Lode and southern mines, and the event stands in memory of Tovey and many other brave, intrepid, self-sacrificing, and loyal Wells Fargo messengers and California stage drivers.
