James W. Fannin, Jr. and his fellow patriots surrendered here on honorable terms on Mar. 20, 1836, but that surrender led to the sacrifice of their lives at La Bahia. Regarded as victims of treachery's brutal stroke, they died to break the tyrant's yoke, and are remembered in words that place their silent tents on fame's eternal camping ground, where glory guards the bivouac of the dead.
