Thompson's Harbor State Park is a remote, largely undeveloped stretch of Lake Huron coast in northeastern Michigan, encompassing 5,109 acres and 7.5 miles of shoreline. Its second-growth forest, limestone cobble beaches, and deep sand dunes create habitat for a large population of dwarf lake iris, more than 100 bird species, and wildlife including coyotes, deer, and black bear. Recreation centers on the natural setting, with trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, rustic cabins, and lakeshore access for sea kayaking. In 2016, it was designated a Michigan dark sky preserve, reflecting both the quality of its night skies and its isolation from artificial light.
