During the spring roundup of 1904 in the Larb Hills south of Saco, cowhands from the Square and DHS outfits successfully lassoed and killed a large grizzly bear. Joe Reynolds of the Long X roped its hind paw, Frank Howe of the Circle C dropped his loop over its head, and as they pulled in opposite directions, Frank Patterson struck it with well-aimed rocks and then used his jack-knife to subdue it without firing a shot. Charles M. Russell later pictured this unusual roping feat in one of his most famous paintings, titled "Loop and Swift Horses Are Surer Than Lead."
