Built in 1950 in Jefferson, Wisconsin, the Richard C. Smith House is a small Usonian home by Frank Lloyd Wright and part of his late exploration of diamond-grid design for modern middle-class housing. Its one-story, lowercase h-shaped plan formed from diamond units created a private terrace centered on an old oak tree, while the house presented a rough limestone, private face to the road and a window-filled, open face toward the terrace and golf course. Though plagued by leaks, climate-control problems, rising costs, and the loss of the oak, the house remains significant as an important stage in Wright’s continuing architectural evolution.
