In May 1861, delegates from seven Kentucky counties and the twenty westernmost counties of Tennessee, known as the Jackson Purchase, met in Mayfield. Support for the Southern cause, dissatisfaction with Kentucky's adherence to the Union, and frustration over Tennessee's delay in joining the South led the convention to vote to secede and form a Confederate state. When Tennessee voted to secede on June 8, 1861, the proposal was abandoned.
