Lorenzo, built by Holland Land Company agent Col. John Lincklaen in 1807, was the seat of the Lincklaen/Ledyard family for 160 years. Land agent and developer John Lincklaen was typical of the early entrepreneurs who were instrumental in the settlement of the region and the creation of industries. Lincklaen's successors followed his lead while becoming increasingly active in state and national politics. Charles S. Fairchild, Lincklaen's grand nephew and fourth Master of Lorenzo, became Attorney General of New York in the 1870's and Secretary of the Treasury in the 1880's. The fifth Master of Lorenzo, Eliphalet Remington, put his mark on the land as an engineer and superintendent of construction for many of the early skyscrapers in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.
