The Akwesasne Cultural Center in Hogansburg, New York, is a museum and library dedicated to the Mohawk Nation community of Akwesasne. Since the library opened in 1971 as the first Native American library east of the Mississippi River, it has grown to more than 28,000 books, including a large Native Collection, and offers broader research access through the Clinton, Essex, Franklin County library system. The museum safeguards photographs and ethnographic materials tied to Akwesasne Mohawk life, including about 2,000 photographic objects and more than 700 ethnographic objects. Its extensive basket holdings especially reflect the enduring importance of black ash splint and sweetgrass basketry in Mohawk identity and heritage.
