Staten Island Children's Museum, on the grounds of Sailors' Snug Harbor in New York City, opened in 1976 through community and government support and became known for hands-on exhibits for children. It occupies two historic Snug Harbor buildings linked by a modern walkway, including a 1913 building and a former barn once used to keep livestock for Snug Harbor residents. The site preserves layers of earlier history, including a surviving civil defense shelter sign from the 1950s. Its interactive spaces, live animals, real fire truck, and practical learning exhibits have helped make it a longstanding family destination, supported over time by outside partners and major arts funding.
