The Huron River Greenway trail follows the Wheeling & Lake Erie railroad track bed, which was built on fill above the original Milan Canal towpath. The section of Village Creek immediately behind this location is the last portion of the former canal with flowing water. Captain Henry Kelley's shipyard stood on the opposite creek bank, and the sloping ridge behind it is the Hogsback, where the Edison home was built in 1842. The area between the trail and the Huron River was the site of the dry dock of S. Ruggles.
