Shikellamy State Park stands at the confluence of the West Branch Susquehanna and the North Branch near Sunbury and Northumberland, combining a bluff-top overlook with a marina on Packer Island. Named for the Iroquois chief Shikellamy, whose village stood nearby, the site has long been important for Native travel, frontier relations, and later public recreation. The overlook became a destination for settlers and visitors, while the river below supported ferry traffic, regattas, and later boating on Lake Augusta after an inflatable dam was installed. Today the park is known for sweeping views, water recreation, a nature trail, and nesting peregrine falcons.
