Pocahontas County was formed from Bath, Pendleton, and Randolph in 1821 and was named for Pocahontas, an Indian princess and friend of the Jamestown settlers. It was the site of the Battle of Droop Mountain on November 6, 1863, and contains the Cranberry Glades. Pendleton County was formed in 1788 from Hardy, Augusta, and Rockingham and was named for Edmund Pendleton, a Virginia statesman-jurist. The county has a range of altitude of over 3500 feet and includes Seneca Rocks, Smoke Hole, and Spruce Knob.
