Near here in 1879, Mormon colonists built Arizona's first woolen mill, hoping to utilize Hopi and Navajo wool and labor and to build a new industry to supply the early settlers. The 192-spindle mill operated only a short time, and its abandonment signaled the failure of the missionary movement among the Hopis.
