People have lived in, named, and known this landscape for more than 11,000 years, and artifacts of their lives surround the area. Ancient Puebloan peoples came to and through here from many places speaking many languages, leaving granaries, arrowheads, rock art, dwellings, pottery, and other cultural remnants that offer glimpses of daily life, artistry, and imagination. For their descendants today, including Hopi, Paiute, Navajo, Zuni, Ute, and others, this remains ancestral homeland. On the cliff face on the other side of Scenic Byway 12 stands an Ancient Puebloan granary made from sandstone that blends with the surrounding cliff. Several hundred years ago, Ancient Puebloans likely stored food there, perhaps cultivated corn and beans and wild edibles such as rice grass and pinyon pine nuts. Native American art and artifacts in the region are irreplaceable pieces of cultural history, with most artifacts more than 800 years old and some rock art dating back 4,000-8,000 years, and they are protected by law.
