High Ground Halts an Invasion

In 1777, American cannons atop Bemus Heights could hit the Hudson and the river road, blocking the only route by which the British Army could reach Albany. Rough terrain on the other side of the Hudson prevented a large army from traveling that way. When the British tried marching west, away from the river, that end-run move sparked the history-changing Battles of Saratoga.
