Johnny Cash moved with his parents and siblings from Kingsland to Dyess, Arkansas in 1935 when he was three years old, but he often returned to the Kingsland area during his youth and early career to visit or stay overnight with his Cash and Rivers relatives. On one trip through Kingsland, Johnny and his friend Elvis Presley spent the night with his Rivers kin, who sent them off with biscuits for the road. In 1959, Johnny returned to the area for a fishing trip with his friend, singer Johnny Horton, and while there, well-known photographs of the two men were taken in front of the old Kingsland Post Office near this place. At the height of his career, Johnny returned to Kingsland as part of the 1976 American Revolution Bicentennial Celebration in Cleveland County, and then-Governor David Pryor proclaimed the day Johnny Cash Day in Arkansas. After the Kingsland events, he rode the train to Rison on the Cotton Belt Railroad Line. His final visit came in March 1994, when he returned to dedicate the new Kingsland Post Office; several thousand people attended events that included a visit to the Kingsland School and a special concert, and at the end he told the crowd, "this has probably been the best day of my life."
