Assawoman Wildlife Area in Sussex County, Delaware, near Frankfort and Little Assawoman Bay, is a state-managed refuge spanning about 3,100 acres in three main tracts. Once farmland lost during the Great Depression, the land became protected habitat under the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. Its name reflects nearby bay names rooted in Algonkian language. Recent conservation projects expanded and restored the area through land purchases, tree planting, and a living shoreline of salt marsh grasses.
