A granary was a place for grain, where oats and corn were stored after harvest until they were fed to animals or ground into flour or corn meal at the mill. Some grain was kept there as seed for the next planting, an essential reserve because without seed there would be no crop in the coming year. The building was raised off the ground to keep the grain safe from rodents.
