The main structure of The Roadhouse was built in 1825 as a typical colonial-style farmhouse. In 1837, it was converted into a hotel, general store, and post office, with a stagecoach stop at the northwest corner. It remained in that form through the Civil War and into the turn of the century, and the bar stayed open even as ownership changed. By the 1930s, The Roadhouse was operating as a restaurant, bar, and hunting lodge. During the 1940s and 1950s, it became known as a family dining spot. In the 1960s and 1970s, it shifted into a rock n roll and biker bar, with mud wrestling in what is now the main dining room, and performers included Tiny Tim and Canned Heat. In 2017, Mark Dennis purchased The Roadhouse and began extensive renovations intended to restore its old charm and elegance. Major renovations were completed in time for its 200th anniversary in July 2025.
