Built by General Electric, Union Pacific's model U28C freight locomotive number 2804 had a 16 cylinder, 4 cycle turbo charged engine that produced 2,800 horsepower. It was 67 feet 3 inches long, weighed 360,000 pounds, and had a 2,900 gallon capacity fuel tank. Union Pacific removed its protective hoods and partly cut away the engine so it could be used as a mechanical training locomotive. In a diesel-electric locomotive, a diesel engine turns an electrical generator, producing direct current electricity that runs electric traction motors. Located in the wheel assemblies, the traction motors use gears on the axles to turn the wheels and pull the train. Number 2804 was donated by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1995.
