The Victorian home of Edith and Harmon Holmes and its double-story carriage house were built on East Middle Street in 1886 and remained home to the Holmes family, founders of Chelsea Milling Company and Jiffy Mixes, until 2011. New owners restored the residence, but the carriage house could not be saved; before its demolition in 2019, its large central barn doors and the Holmes' cutter were donated to the Chelsea Area Historical Society. The Holmes' cutter, an American Carriage Company cutter made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, about 1900 and most likely commissioned by Mr. Holmes, came from a firm that produced carriages, sleighs, and cutters from 1890 to 1920. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, sleighs and cutters were horse-drawn winter transportation, with sleighs built larger for whole families and cutters made smaller for individual use, their close seating also making them popular with courting couples.
