Winchester Speedway is one of the most significant historic short tracks in the United States. It opened in 1914 as Funk’s Speedway and has held races continuously since. Known as the “World’s Fastest ½ mile,” it is the steepest banked active race track in the US. Winchester has long attracted many of the world’s most famous racers and at one time was a necessary place to race for those seeking to compete in the Indianapolis 500. Indianapolis 500 winners including Troy Ruttman, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Mario Andretti, Bobby Unser, and Johnny Rutherford raced there, and the track also helped develop NASCAR stars such as Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart. Today it continues to draw competitors as ARCA and USAC drivers take on the facility.
