During the Civil War, the area around Leetown, Arkansas, on the Pea Ridge battlefield was a patchwork of working farms and woodlots rather than the uninhabited wilderness seen today. Leetown consisted of about a dozen log-and-frame homes and outbuildings. As intense fighting raged nearby in Oberson's cornfield and Morgan's Woods, stretcher bearers brought wounded soldiers from both armies to Leetown because it was the nearest place offering shelter from the winter weather. Houses were filled with injured and dying men, and yellow hospital flags directed the walking wounded to medical care as surgeons worked in aid stations set up in the homes. No Civil War-era drawing of Leetown is known, and no structure remains there today.
