Hall of State in Fair Park, Dallas, was built as the State of Texas building for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition, celebrating a century since Texas independence. Widely regarded as one of the state’s finest Art Deco buildings, it emerged from Dallas’s successful effort to host the centennial and was designed chiefly by Donald Barthelme after early plans by George Dahl. Its monumental design expresses Texas identity through sculpture, symbolic bronze doors, inscriptions, murals, and regional rooms centered on Texas history. Managed by the Dallas Historical Society since 1938, it remains a museum and ceremonial building, later recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and part of Fair Park’s National Register listing.
