Early residents of what would become the Oklahoma settlement moved into the area in the middle to late 19th century, farming, raising livestock, and using the rail station at nearby Hufsmith to ship local products. Interested in educating their children, settlers built the first Oklahoma Community School by 1880 with a $300 donation and property from the G.V. Leslie family beside what would become the Oklahoma Cemetery, and the one-room building served as both school and church house. In July 1923, residents built a two-room school on two acres bought from John and Ida Hirsch for $90. After it burned in 1930, the Montgomery County School District erected another two-room schoolhouse there later that year, with A.L. Standard as contractor. Students raised money for playground and sports equipment through box suppers. Beginning in 1936, seventh-grade and older students attended school in Tomball, and in 1944 all students transferred to Magnolia Schools. The schoolhouse never reopened and instead served as a community center and election polling place. It remains a focal point for the area and reflects the pride, identity, and heritage of the community's pioneer farm families.
