William Wyatt Bibb was born in Amelia County, Virginia, on Oct. 2, 1781, served in the U.S. Congress from Georgia from 1805 to 1813, moved here from Elbert County, Georgia, in 1817, was the only governor of Alabama Territory from 1817 to 1819, and became the first governor of Alabama from 1819 to 1820. He was buried in a private cemetery near his home, and he was succeeded by his brother, Thomas Bibb, the presiding officer of the state senate.
