Murphy James Foster was a prominent Saint Mary Parish plantation owner and lawyer of the Reconstruction period who served the people of Louisiana with honor and distinction as Louisiana State Senator from 1880 to 1892, thirty-first Governor from 1892 to 1900, and United States Senator from 1901 to 1912.
