An oil-burning steam locomotive built by Baldwin in 1911 was purchased by the Southern Pacific R.R. in 1928 to haul passengers and freight along the 300-mile narrow gauge line locally known as the “Slim Princess.” Originally known as the Carson & Colorado Railroad, the line was completed to Keeler, CA in 1883 and had a profound effect on the economy of the Owens Valley. Ore and agricultural products that had taken 10 days by mule teams could reach the markets of western Nevada in one day, helping the economy of the Eastern Sierra boom, the population grow, and agricultural production rival the San Joaquin Valley. That prosperity was short lived, however, as mines failed and farming declined because water was diverted to Los Angeles, and freight and passenger fares dropped until the railroad was abandoned in 1960.
