Roosevelt Park, a two hundred seventeen-acre county park in Edison, New Jersey, began with land acquired in 1917 for a tuberculosis hospital that was never built as first planned. By 1923, local officials and civic groups were instead promoting the site as Middlesex County’s first park, and a children’s tuberculosis camp opened there in 1924. Established in 1933, the park developed during the Depression through federal relief programs and remains the county system’s oldest park. Its history also includes the adjacent Roosevelt Hospital, the 1938 Waylande Gregory fountain Light Dispelling Darkness, and a long-standing mix of memorials, accessible recreation, trails, lake activities, sports facilities, and summer performances.
