The first frame bugeye, the Carrie, was built on Solomons Island in 1870. The bugeye was a Chesapeake Bay work boat used in the oystering industry for hauling freight, and it became a symbol of the Chesapeake Bay heritage of Solomons Island. A bronze sculpture of the bugeye was cast from a carving created for the Calvert Marine Museum by Leroy "Pepper" Langley, and a mold was made from the carving by his son, Jimmy Langley, in 1992 and used to make the bronze casting.
