In the Short Hills section of Millburn, New Jersey, the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary preserves 16.5 acres of woodland in a suburban setting while serving conservation, education, and public recreation. Stewart Hartshorn gave the land to Cora Hartshorn in 1923, and she developed roads and walking paths through the previously undeveloped forest; by 1938, the arboretum had 3 miles of paths. After her death in 1958, she left it to the township. The preserve includes dozens of tree species, rare ferns, more than 150 wildflower species, and about 100 bird species, with the Stone House supporting its educational mission.
