Newtowne Neck State Park
Nature
Newtowne Neck State Park occupies a peninsula about four miles southwest of Leonardtown in Southern Maryland, bordered by Breton Bay, St. Clements Bay, and the Potomac River. The land entered Maryland’s state park system through the state’s 2009 purchase of former Jesuit holdings. After military ordnance was discovered on the property, the park closed in 2012 and reopened in 2014. It is valued today for its relatively undeveloped character, seven miles of shoreline, and recreation focused on fishing, hunting, kayaking, and unimproved hiking and biking trails in a less-built waterfront setting.
