Camp Jackson was named in honor of Gen. Andrew Jackson. This cantonment site one and a half miles north was approved by the War Dept. June 2, 1917. Its maximum strength was recorded in June 1918 at 3,302 officers and 45,402 men. The 81st Division was trained here from Aug. 29, 1917, to May 18, 1918, and the 5th Division was stationed here from Oct. 20, 1920, to Oct. 4, 1921. It was made a training camp for the National Guard in 1925.
