The citizens of Margate City erected an honor roll as an everlasting tribute to those who answered their country’s call: Theodore J. Haring, killed in action; Harry McClain, wounded; Ollie Hackney; Leon J. Norcross; Howard McClain; Joseph Sullivan; and William Sullivan. It invokes Lincoln’s words that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. Earl E. Jeffries served as mayor, John Spalding as commissioner of public works, E. Bertram Wright as commissioner of revenue and finance, and R. Bayne Williams as architect.
