Austin Chapel Church & The Austin Family Homeplace

As the Church of Christ spread into West Tennessee, Benjamin Austin and his wife Lucinda heard and obeyed the gospel and became Christians in 1872. They began holding Church services each Lord's Day in their home about 1/2 mile west of here, drawing relatives and friends from all around. In the early 1900s, as Ben aged, the services moved to the home of his son Elias Austin and Elias's wife Sapronia, at this site. Over the years, the number of members in this home church grew, with most walking here, and Sunday services were conducted each week in the Elias Austin home for more than 45 years. By 1953, as Elias aged, he and Sapronia donated the lot across the road, their best orchard, for a new church building so that the services would continue after they were gone. The Austin family spent many happy days at this homesite as they worked together and served the Lord.
